Flying Site

Fairlie Moor Rocket Site (FMRS)

16 miles south-west of Base Camp – the SARA flying site since 2004

All IRW rocket flying takes place at the Fairlie Moor Rocket Site (FMRS), located 16 miles (25.6 km) south-west of the Lapwing Lodge Base Camp. A route map will be displayed in the Activity Hall at Base Camp. Those without their own transport can arrange lifts — IRW people are always helpful in this regard.

The FMRS has several separate launch areas to safely accommodate Model, High Power, and Large Rocket launching in parallel. There is also an Aquajet/Water Rocket range at the FMRS during IRW.

Altitude

  • Standard site ceiling: 16,000 feet (4,876 m) AMSL
  • Site elevation: 820 feet (250 m) AMSL
  • Extended ceiling up to ~23,000 ft (7,010 m) can be arranged under NATS Temporary Operating Instruction (TOI) arrangements — contact SARA at least 8 weeks in advance

Getting there

Directions from Base Camp to FMRS and back are available via Google Maps. A route map will also be displayed in the Activity Hall at Lapwing Lodge.

Site safety notes

Please read the following carefully before attending the flying site.

  • Public road through the site — be aware of traffic at all times. Rocket launches will be controlled in relation to road traffic safety
  • Terrain — open moorland at 820 ft. Ground is boggy in places with concealed streams. Strong waterproof boots are essential
  • Rocket recovery — unless your rocket lands close to the launch pad you must be accompanied by another person and carry a mobile phone or radio
  • Public access — under Scottish countryside law the land is open access. Walkers and dogs may appear at any time
  • Livestock — sheep and cattle may be present. Give all animals a wide berth and walk quietly
  • Weather — Scottish weather can change rapidly. Always bring waterproof boots, a waterproof jacket, warm clothing, sunscreen, and plenty of water
  • Personal responsibility — you are primarily responsible for your own safety and that of anyone in your care
  • Parking — all parking at the FMRS is at the owner’s risk
